Bed and Sleeping

bed

  • Turning a feather bed on a Sunday gives the people who use it bad dreams for a week.
  • Feather beds make it difficult for a dying person to die.

Marriage

  • If you make a bedspread, or a quilt, be sure to finish it or marriage will never come to you
  • Make the foot of the bed before the head, or else my dear, you’ll never wed!
  • Having an unfinished bedspread in the house prevents anyone in the house from being married.
  • If a single woman sleeps with a piece of wedding cake under her pillow, she will dream of her future husband.

You’ll have a restless night’s sleep:

  • If a bed is placed facing north and south, it also brings misfortune.
  • If a bed is placed across floorboards rather than with themt.
  • When making the bed, don’t interrupt your work, or you will spend a restless night in it.
  • Never turn your mattress on a Sunday, or change a bed on Friday or you’ll have bad dreams.

Bad luck:

  • Getting out of the “wrong side” or left side of the bed. If you do, protect yourself from this bad luck by putting on your right sock and shoe first when dressing.
  • You must get out of bed on the same side that you get in or you will have bad luck.
  • Foot of the bed placed toward the door.
  • It’s bad luck to put a hat on a bed.
  • More than two people making a bed.

North Pillow: If you put your head to the north when you sleep, you will have bad luck because (in Japan) only dead people lie with their head to the north. We always pay attention to the direction our heads will point when we put beds in a room or lay futons on the floor. We call this superstition “kita-makura.” Kita means north. Makura means pillow.
