Do not lean a broom against a bed. The evil spirits in the broom will cast a spell on the bed.

If you sweep trash out the door after dark, it will bring a stranger to visit.

If someone is sweeping the floor and sweeps over your feet, you’ll never get married.

Never take a broom along when you move. Throw it out and buy a new one.

To prevent an unwelcome guest from returning, sweep out the room they stayed in immediately after they leave.

If the broom touched your feet you were required to spit on it for fear of having someone in your family sent to jail.

Owls

To see a white owl during the day is a good omen, it means you are being watched over and guided by someone wise in the spirit world.

A typical myth is that if a white owl sits on your roof, someone within your household will be very ill, or signifies a death.

Petting an owl is absorbing mystical wisdom.

To be bitten by an owl means your children will be dumb.

Knocking on wood is believed to be calling on spirits who can protect us from misfortune. These spirits are believed to live in the trees and by knocking on anything made of wood, we call on them.

Ancient people believed that evil spirts lived in trees. To scare them away they would hit the tree. This is where our custom of “knocking on wood” comes from – to hope that bad things won’t happen.

You must knock on wood 3 times after mentioning good fortune or the evil spirits will ruin things for you.

Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights, is the name given to the colored lights in the sky observed in the extreme Northern Hemisphere.

Seeing the aurora borealis means there will be war.
Spirits cavorting in the heavens.
