Good luck omens:

Divination with Herrings:
To see an image of your future spouse: Eat a whole salted herring in three mouthfulls, retire to bed without a drink and don’t say a word. That night you will dream of your future partner.
To know if a future husband will be attractive and trustworthy:
Throw the white membrane of a herring at a wall. If the skin sticks to the wall and is not a crooked shape, your future husband will be attractive and trustworthy. If the herring skin sticks crookedly or fails to stick, your future spouse will be undesirable.

Tench:

Eating tench makes you strong and wise and can cure illness.
Other freshwater fish rub themselves against tench when they are sick.

Trout:

Putting a trout’s head into a patient’s mouth cures whooping cough.
Drinking beer in which a trout has been drowned cures whooping cough.
Drinking milk in which a live trout has been made to swim cures whooping cough.

Hiccups

Cures:

Take a straw from the broom break it in half burn each end and place it on the top of your head in the shape of a cross to cure the hiccups.

Ascension Day

According to the Christian calendar, Ascension Day represents the day Christ ascended to heaven and occurs on the Thursday following the fifth Sunday after Easter.

Working on Ascension Day is bad luck and brings about accidents.

Rain on Ascension Day means cattle will suffer disease and crops will fail.

On Ascension Day clouds form the image of a lamb.

Eggs:

If you make a gift to the blind or poor you will be blessed with great wealth during the year.

Frogs

Cures:

Wear the body of a dried frog or powered frog livers around your neck in a silk bag to avoid epilepsy.
Swallow live young frogs to cure weakness, consumption and cancer.
Rub a live frog on warts and impale the frog on a tree to die to make warts go away.
To cure whooping cough, eat frog soup.
To treat eye problems a volunteer must lick a frog’s eyes and then the eyes of a patient.

Frogs as weather omens:

A frog with shiny skin means fine weather is coming.

Donkeys

Running:

A dog running between a dating couple means they will fight and not marry.
A dog running between a woman’s legs means her father or husband will punish her for something.

Colored dogs:

It’s good luck for a black dog to follow you home.
If you dream of a black dog, or to see an image of a black dog in a fire, means a friend is near.
It’s bad luck if a black dog crosses in front of you.
It’s good luck to see a white dog before noon.
It’s good luck to see three white dogs together.
Regarding business, if a black and white dog crosses your path while you are on your way to a meeting, you’ll have good luck in your dealings.
